What is submental fullness?

Submental fullness is a gathering of excess fat beneath the chin, commonly known as “double chin.” It can be something you’ve had your whole life due to genetics, or start to appear as you get older or if you gain weight.

What is a Kybella?

Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which is administered in the form of injections. In the United States, deoxycholic acid, under the trade name Kybella, is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for reducing moderate-to-severe fat below the chin. When injected into submental fat, deoxycholic acid helps destroy fat cells.

Is Kybella new?

Kybella injections are very similar to mesotherapy which coined in 1958 in France and was developed by Michel Pistor. Mesotherapy is very popular in Europe and South America for treatment of subcutaneous fat. Mesotherapy is injection of vitamins, deoxycholic acid and other substances. The formula is not fixed and varies from practitioner to practitioner. The deoxycholic acid used in Kybella is plant-derived. The plant-derived deoxycholic acid in Kybella avoids issues with bovine sourcing used in earlier mesotherapy cocktails, he added. And unlike mesotherapy products, Kybella has been extensively tested in double-blinded, randomized clinical trials.

Deoxycholic acid received FDA approval as an injectable to dissolve submental fat June 2015. This was based on a Phase III randomized trial of 2600 patients. 68.2% showed a response by measurement of the fat deposit. 81% had mild adverse reactions of bruising, swelling, pain, numbness, erythema, and firmness around the treated area.

"Well, the last time I had a picture taken I could hardly see my eyes because of the weight of heavy eyelid. Then I paid attention to how I was actually using my eyes and I really noticed when I was looking at anything especially the computer I was straining my forehead to see better. Since I have had it done I no longer have to lift the forehead and tilt my head to see. It is amazing! I love..."  D. Rock  63 Yrs Old with Fat Droopy Eyes - Salt Lake City, UT

What is Kybella® indicated for?

KYBELLA® is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.”

What are the side-effects of Kybella injections?

The most common side effects of KYBELLA® include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

How does Kybella® work?

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

How is Kybella® administered?

Treatment can only be administered by a KYBELLA®-trained healthcare specialist. At each treatment, you will receive multiple small injections under your chin, and the injection process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The exact number of injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile.

How is kybella® treatment sessions will i need?

Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient. Your healthcare specialist will help determine how many treatment sessions you

need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Each KYBELLA®treatment session is given at least 1 month apart, and you should not receive more than 6 treatments. In clinical studies, 59% of patients received 6 treatments.

Will i need time to recover?

"I had a excellent eye lift done by Dr. Patel. He knows what he is doing and is very pleasant. Dr.Patel was easy to get an appointment and he works with you. The office staff was very pleasant and made you feel calm."  D. Gull Highly recommended for eye lift surgery - Salt Lake City, UT

Can you explain how treatment with KYBELLA® is planned and the costs please?

The treatments usually run around 1200-1800 dollars depending on how many vials are used.  For most people it is two vials.  It takes at least 2 treatments and sometimes up to 4.  Each treatment is spaced about 6 weeks apart.  The first few days you swell up quite a bit.  It goes back to about your baseline at one week.  You will start noticing an improvement after your second treatment.

It has quickly become apparent that everyone is quite different, and that the treatment not only has to be tailored to the amount of fat targeted under the chin, but also the size of the area. In the studies done by Allergan, the maker of Kybella, the typical patient required between 2-4 treatments, with a few needing as little as 1, but some as many as 6. It has been found by surgeons that most men will require 4 – 5 vials injected over time and most ladies will need 6 -8 vials. One does not need to continue injecting much beyond three sessions.
